We had the pleasure of attending Vodou Bar’s official grand opening last night and mingled with an energetic crowd of fashionably dressed individuals – men in their finest suits and women in their six-inch heels -  sipping on specialty cocktails like “Hell’s Fury” and “The Doll”.  Guests noshed on Shrimp cocktail, Curried deviled eggs and mini cupcakes by Desi Lu Sweets.

Located at 95 Halsey at the corner of Nostrand Avenue, Vodou (pronounced voo-doo) Bar is the brainchild of Bed-Stuy residents and owners Daphnee Surpris and Emmanuel Tropnasse and a welcoming addition to the neighborhood.  “I grew tired of having to go to Manhattan for upscale entertainment”, was Surpris’s response to why she co-created Vodou.

Bed-Stuy residents definitely have a new oasis to chill out in now – away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan.  Vodou is a stunning and inviting cocktail lounge that exudes classy, chic and sophistication; and it can easily be mistaken for a lounge that belongs across the river.  A simple but chic interior of brown leather sofas and stools and cement cocktail tables, Vodou was designed by sought after and renowned interior architect Henry Mithcell.  Not only is the cocktail lounge sultry, it is also eco-friendly and its entire walls and ceiling are covered in smartly designed wood chips.  The windows are bathed in a criss-crossing wood design that matches the pattern of the wood walls, concrete floors, and a glass topped bar with beautiful stones from the beaches of Haiti.

Vodou reinvents Brooklyn nightlife by providing a space for clientele to chill out with friends, and it’s romantic enough to enjoy a first date.  Warmer weather may be on its way, but that won’t prevent you from enjoying the wonderful fireplace located towards the rear of the bar.  And get this, a chandelier made completely of upside down wine glasses hangs over the bar!

Although Vodou screams luxury, there are no $18 cocktails on the menu.  The affordably priced cocktail menu was created by New York’s most popular mixologist, Darryl Robinson of Cooking Channel¹s Drink Up, and features all natural ingredients and premium spirits. In addition to the tantalizing cocktails, Vodou Bar offers delectable food items including Fried Oysters, Nola Crawfish Roll Sliders, and Smoked Salmon Blinis.
Vodou Bar is one neighborhood bar that won’t disappoint!
